From Me To You

'From Me To You' is a performance by Singapore musicians and was held at the Esplanade at the concourse. The performance that I watched was by Sarah Cheng-De Winnie, a local singer, songwriter, actor and a radio DJ on 938Live, known for her delightfully soulful voice. It was indeed a great performance. It can be seen from her performance that she enjoyed singing the songs and there is a connection between her and the audience during her performance. I was moved by her 30 minutes performance of her own R&B/Soul songs like 'Take Me' which is inspired by her brother. Some passer by also decided to hang around for awhile to watch her performance. It was simply amazing and I had an enjoyable time there.

SARAH CHENG-DE WINNE 30mins

The performance takes place at The Concourse. It’s a small theatre with simple set up; the lights on the stage is more to darker tone, the technical base that supports the music is really good. The speaker was set up in front of the vocalist and seat for her one and only guitarist. For singer’s performance, Sarah’s unique voice has expressed R&B and soul very well; her strong vocal is what made her distinctive. On the night, she managed to sing 6 songs, and among those I was really mesmerised by <Diagonal Ring >, which involves lots of soul twist and falsetto, yet she managed to finish the song beautifully. Throughout the performance, there was not even a slightest hitch; there was no doubt that her guitarist contributes a lot to this. Lastly, I would say that the flow of the performance is really smooth and entertaining.

Esplanade @ the Concourse

It’s Mariam John, along with Ian Soh (pianist) and another percussionist performing at Esplanade @ the Concourse! It was a short 20 minutes performance with 4 songs sang. Namely: Candy & Flowers, Stay Behind, Unreal & Travelling Balls.

The lyrics sang by Mariam was full of expression & her notes were explosive. The strong beat played by the percussionist & the melody by the pianist definitely moved our bodies together with the songs. The constructing of lights when she’s singing did create a marvellous atmosphere. I almost thought that I was in a Concert! Short introduction during her song intervals efficiently let us know more about her.

It's really encouraging to such a promising singer in Singapore. From this, I’ve learnt to appreciate local arts more.

Setting : Tailor Shop

No one knows what really happens behind closed doors of every family. Like Jen's family, Jen's mother passed away when she was young, her father hopes to give Jen the best, send her aboard to study, prepared to give Jen all he have, never did he expect that Jen rejected all his offers and decide not to stay in Singapore but London. Her father really broke down when Jen's Fiances appears because Jen mention nothing about this issue. Day by day, Jen's father brain getting from bad to worst, he starts to forget everything and in the end, he forgotten Jen. This is when Jen regretted what she have done.

I liked this play and find it really touching. A play that includes alot of elements of acting, like arguement, comedy, romance. It made me laugh, made me angry, and tears me down.
I have learned that 'Cherish what we have now and not until we lose it later'. Kinship comes before everything.

Mariam John

Mariam John is a fellow Singaporean, along with her pianist Ian Soh and another percussionist. I caught her performance at the Esplanade @ the concourse.
She sang four songs during her 20minutes performance, namely, Candy & Flowers, Stay Behind, Unreal and Travelling Balls.

Mariam was full of expression when she sang those original songs of hers, when her whole body grooving to the jazz beat. From her facial expression to her hands and the tapping of her feet. Never did I think that I would enjoy such performance but I did. She was engaging with us audience during her song intervals and that really gave a warmth performance too.

It's really encouraging to see people striving to make it out from the little red dot, starting out from the internet first, iTunes. From this, we learn to appreciate local talents more.
